The airport to fly into is Seattle-Tacoma International airport, commonly known as Sea-Tac (SEA).
Now! We’d encourage you to book your travel as earlier as possible. See the Travel page for suggestions.
Whidbey is about a 40 minute drive from downtown Seattle, not accounting for any traffic. The airport is a bit longer, about an hour to an hour & ten minutes from the Whidbey ferry.
Whidbey Island is one of the longest islands in the contiguous United States with a population of around 50,000. There are plenty of grocery stores, resturaunts, and places to visit while you're on the island. While the island has all the ammenities you need it is still quite rural. Uber and Lyft are still unavailable on the island and during the summer the Island economy largely revoloves around tourism. We've created a map with recommended stores and resturaunts to help you navigate Whidbey better.
We’d recommend having access to a car. While we’ll be providing shuttles to and from the wedding and the welcome party, Whidbey isn’t the easiest place to get around without a set of wheels. Renting a car from any of the rental companies located at Sea-Tac airport will likely be the most convenient. If you just need to get from Sea-Tac to Whidbey, there is a very affordable and convenient shuttle that runs between the Seattle-Tacoma Airport and Whidbey quite frequently. You can find additional information here (https://www.seatacshuttle.com/).
It’s typical for the ferry line to be as long as 2 hours over the Labor Day weekend. If you’re traveling to Whidbey on Friday you can expect up to a 2 hour wait if you arrive after 12:00 pm. There is likely to be a ferry line on Saturday morning as well but it’s hard to know so give yourself plenty of time when you arrive. Leaving the Island after the wedding on Monday is harder to predict so give yourself plenty of time. The peak for ferry traffic will be between 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. It can again be up to a 2 hour wait but it’s less predictable.
The Ferry ride is quite short, from dock to dock it takes about 20 minutes. The Ferry leaves every half-hour from 8:00 am -10:00 pm and every hour between 5:00 am - 8:00am and 10:00 am - 1:00am. You can see the full sailing schedule here (https://www.wsdot.com/ferries/schedule/).
Garden Party: Easy, breezy, summery. Sundresses, jumpsuits, linen suits, button downs with fun prints all welcome, jackets optional, please no jeans (or wedding dresses). This is an outdoor wedding on soft (and sometimes uneven) grass, so wear wedding appropriate and comfortable footwear (i.e. for women think wedges or sandals, not stilettos; men loafers not sneakers).
While the Northwest is known for being wet and rainy, the end of August and early September can be quite dry. While there may be some precipitation it should only be minimal. The temperature should be in the high to mid 60’s during the day and dropping into the low 60’s to high 50’s at night. So if you tend to get cold, consider bringing a light jacket or shawl for when the sun goes down.
We’ve built up a map with some great locations and recommendations on Whidbey and around Seattle. You can find it on the “things to do” tab.
Yes, we will be providing shuttles for both the welcome party and wedding. The shuttles will be picking up from Langley and Maxwelton (exact locations TBD). They can possibly make additional picks-up and drop-offs, time permitting. We will be asking for lodging addresses from all our guests closer to the date to try and accommodate easy shuttle pickups and drops-offs. Stay tuned!
The welcome party and the wedding are both at private residences, so you can’t google them. The exact address for each can be found on the invite page.
The welcome party will be primarily seafood based (shellfish, fish, mollusk, etc). But not to worry, there will be other options including salads and sides. The wedding will include roasted vegetables, fried chicken, pulled pork, salads and sides. We are taking into consideration our vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy prone guests, but if you have specific diet concerns please let us know and we’ll be sure to reserve enough for you.
