What's Medellin Like?

Answer

Medellin is the second largest city in Colombia. It is located in the valley of Aburra, surrounded by lush nature and green mountains. Locals are generally very friendly and willing to help out in any situation. As with any major city in the world, it's important to use common sense and take necessary precautions when out and about. In Colombia we call this "no dar papaya" (do not give papaya). This means, avoid wearing flashy jewelry around the city, avoid venturing out on your own in the late hours of the night, etc. Basically, be aware and be street smart.

Medellin es una de las ciudades mas grandes y modernas de Colombia. Su gente es amable y buena gente. Es una ciudad segura, pero como en cualquier gran ciudad, se recomienda tomar precauciones al transitar por la ciudad. No dar papaya!

What will the Weather in Medellin be like in March?

Known as "The City of the Eternal Spring", Medellin is blessed to have beautiful weather year-round. In March, the high temperatures are around mid to high 70s, while at night the lows can get into the high 50s. Rain showers can be expected every now and then so pack accordingly!

What is the Currency in Colombia?

Answer

The currency in Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP). 1 USD = roughly 4,000 COP. While most restaurants and businesses accept most major debit and credit cards, it is recommended you carry some cash for smaller purchases. You can exchange USD to COP with your local bank in the US before traveling, or you can use the currency exchange at the Medellin airport, or local Colombian banks like Bancolombia. Please avoid using ATMs on the streets, and instead use the ones at supermarkets, banks, malls, or the airport.

What Language is Spoken in Colombia?

Spanish is the official language in Colombia. While some people will speak some English in touristy areas, and most restaurants will have English menus upon request, we suggest you learn a few phrases in Spanish! Additionally, downloading a translator app on your phone could be beneficial as well.

HOW DO WE GET AROUND MEDELLIN?

Uber is safe, reliable, and affordable throughout Colombia. Note that some Uber drivers may ask you to sit at the front (passenger seat). This is normal in Colombia.

Is the tap water safe to drink in medellin?

Absolutely. Medellin's tap water is treated and purified and can be drunk straight from the tap.

Are there any local customs or etiquette I should be aware of?

Answer

Yes, Medellín is known for its friendly and welcoming people. It’s customary to greet others with “buenos días” (good morning) or “buenas tardes” (good afternoon) throughout the day. Additionally, when getting out of an Uber or any vehicle, be mindful that cars are generally smaller, so try to close the door gently. Your uber driver will greatly appreciate it!

Are there any tipping customs guests should be aware of?

Yes, most restaurants will ask if you want the tip included (10%). You can choose to decline this option and leave a different amount if you prefer, but it is customary to tip around 10%.

Due to limited space, we can only accommodate guests listed on the invitation. Please refer to your invitation to confirm if a guest is included. If you received a plus one, they’ll appear under your name when you RSVP.

While we love your little ones, our venue has strict capacity limitations. Therefore, our wedding will be mostly adults, with the exception of kids in our families. We hope you understand, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you!
