Things To Do

Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que

3002 West 47th Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66103
, (913) 722-3366

The best BBQ in Kansas City, nay--the world. Disagree? Fight us.

Gates Bar-B-Q

3205 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64111
, (816) 753-0828

Also legit BBQ, where the customer service must be experienced in person. Megan recommends the BBQ chicken; Ben recommends the strawberry drink.

Arthur Bryant's Barbeque

1727 Brooklyn Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64127
, (816) 231-1123

An old classic, and inventor of local mainstay, the burnt ends. If you prefer vinegar-based sauce, this is for you. Also, it's in the 18th and Vine neighborhood, so added historic bonus.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

1616 East 18th Street, Kansas City, MO 64108
, (816) 221-1920

Underappreciated gem of a little-known part of American history. Located in the neighborhood where the Negro Leagues started, the museum has all the memorabilia of the greats of the league, including Satchel Paige's Rules for Living.

National WWI Museum and Memorial

2 Memorial Drive, Kansas City, MO 64108
, (816) 888-8100

Kansas City has the national WWI memorial--who knew? The memorial itself is beautiful, and the museum is fascinating, if, y'know, slightly depressing.

The Precious Moments Chapel

4321 South Chapel Road, Carthage, MO 64836
, (800) 543-7975

So maybe you have significant time to kill and want to drive south to Carthage. In this case, have you heard the good, yet disturbing news of America's Sistine Chapel? It's true! There is an entire complex dedicated to religious iconography done in the style of Precious Moments! It is several theological doctoral theses in one location, just waiting to be written! (Ben and Megan went here on one of their first dates, feeling they needed to observe this in its native habitat.)

Glore Psychiatric Museum

3406 Frederick Avenue, Saint Joseph, MO 64506
, (816) 364-1209

It's a former state mental hospital that was turned into a museum, mostly by its residents! Come for the history of mental healthcare in the US; stay for the 1960's era-patient-created dioramas of medieval treatment!
