Yes, you will need a valid passport to attend the wedding in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's important to ensure that your passport is up-to-date well in advance of your travel dates. It must be valid 6 months before the wedding to get into the country.
Typically, routine processing for a new passport application can take around 4 to 6 weeks from the time of application submission until you receive your passport in the mail. However, during peak travel seasons or due to unforeseen circumstances, processing times may be longer. If you need your passport more urgently, you can request expedited processing which generally takes about 2 to 3 weeks. Additionally, expedited services may incur an extra fee. It's important to apply for your passport as soon as possible to ensure you receive it in time for your travel to Edinburgh. Be sure to check the current processing times and requirements on the official website of the passport issuing authority in your country for the most accurate information. If you have any concerns or specific deadlines, consider contacting the passport agency directly or utilizing expedited services to expedite the process.
The best way to reach Edinburgh from the United States is by flying. Most international travelers fly into Edinburgh Airport (EDI), which offers direct flights from major airports in the United States. Alternatively, you can also consider flying to other major European airports such as London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) Paris (CDG) Dublin (DUB) Zurich (ZRH) and then taking a connecting flight or train to Edinburgh. It's advisable to compare flight options and prices to find the most convenient and affordable route for your travel dates. Additionally, you may want to consider factors such as layover durations and travel time when making your travel arrangements. If you need any assistance or recommendations regarding travel arrangements, feel free to reach out to us. We're here to help make your journey to Edinburgh as smooth and enjoyable as possible!
Although not mandatory, renting a car could be advantageous if you intend to explore Scotland post-wedding. Keep in mind that driving is on the opposite side of the road.
You can book a rental car through any of the below companies if you wish to use a US based company, the below are all available at the Edinburgh airport: Hertz Avis Enterprise Alamo Budget
As of my last update in January 2022, US citizens visiting the UK, including Scotland, are not required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) if they have a valid US driver's license. Your US driver's license should generally be accepted for renting and driving a car in Scotland. However, it's always a good idea to carry an IDP alongside your US driver's license, especially if you plan to travel extensively or if you encounter any situations where it may be requested. While not a legal requirement in the UK, an IDP serves as an official translation of your driver's license into multiple languages, making it easier for authorities to understand your driving credentials.
In the United States, you can obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) from either the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA).
All wedding events will take place at Carlowrie Castle, located at Boathouse Bridge Road, Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland, EH29 9ES. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
For transportation to the venue, we recommend using Uber or various cab services, especially if you plan to indulge in alcoholic beverages for safety reasons. However, if you've rented a car and won't be drinking, there is ample parking available onsite. Travel from suggested hotels to the castle is about 10 minutes.
Parking will not be an issue, as there is more than enough parking available onsite for all our guests.
The wedding ceremony will be held indoors. However, since it's winter in Scotland, please bear in mind that there might be snow or rain.
We've arranged room blocks at The Dakota for guests not staying onsite. The hotel is a convenient 10-minute drive from the venue, although it's outside the main city of Edinburgh. If you prefer to stay closer to the city, there are plenty of hotels and Airbnbs within the city limits, although you'll be approximately 30 minutes away from the wedding festivities. The Dakota Information £140 Bed & Breakfast per Classic Double Room per evening on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of November 2025. Guests can then phone on 0131 319 3690 or email reservations@edb.dakotahotels.co.uk to make their reservations directly.
At present, we're not planning on renting a shuttle due to the close proximity of the venue and the availability of Uber. We will provide uber codes closer to the wedding.
The wedding itself will be formal, but all other wedding events will have a casual dress code. Outfit inspo was mailed with invitations, and additional inspo will be added to the email link provided with details.
While it's not mandatory, we suggest wearing dark colors to complement our goth glam vibe. Think along the lines of black, plum, maroon, evergreen, etc.
The weather in Scotland can be quite unpredictable, much like the atmosphere of an Edgar Allan Poe book—dark, moody, and mysterious.
We've curated a diverse menu with a range of delicious options to cater to various tastes and dietary preferences.
When RSVPing, you'll have the opportunity to notify us of any dietary restrictions or allergies. We'll make sure to communicate this information to the Castle so they can accommodate your needs.
On the night of the wedding, each guest will receive three glasses of champagne and half a bottle of wine per person as part of the package. We will also have a signature drink. Additional alcoholic beverages can be purchased separately. For all other events, there will be a predetermined quantity of beer and wine provided. Additionally, there will be a fully stocked bar where guests can purchase their preferred drinks.
We kindly request that guests bring cash for additional tips if you feel they are doing a great job. Many of us have experience working in the hospitality industry and want to ensure our staff receives extra appreciation.
You can mail them to us at 5048 Afton Way SE, Smyrna GA 30080
Your enthusiasm to capture our special day is truly appreciated! During the ceremony, we're aiming for an intimate atmosphere, so we kindly request no photography. We will not be live-streaming our wedding but will be happy to share pictures and videos after the events.
We will continue to keep our website up-to-date as events progress.
