Question

Getting to the island

Answer

All flights will land in Cancun. There are many companies that will transfer from the airport to the ferry. A few of them are CARM Tours and Transfers, Luxury Van Transportation, Happy Shuttle Cancun, Best Day, and USA Transfers. The ferry runs every 30 minutes from 5:30am to 8:30pm. Carm Tours and Transfers- owned and operated by American expats living in Cancun. Private transfer with option to add drinks. Will also provide Ferry tickets if added. Luxury Van Transportation- Private Transfer. Provides the transfer, ferry tickets, and have a taxi waiting on the island. There is also an option to have a cooler with drinks in the van. Best Day- this company allows a shared ride option for cheaper rates. We recommend splitting this with 2-8 people for the best rates.

Question

Transportation on the island

Answer

The ferry ride is a 15 minute beautiful ride to Isla Mujeres. Your transportation service will give you your ferry ticket for Gran Puerto Juarez. Once you arrive, there is an option to give your luggage to an employee who will load your luggage and works for tips (a couple USD will work). You can also load it yourself in the back of the ferry. Once you get to the island, there is a taxi stand to your left. The Taxi will take you to your hotel or condo. Confirm the price of the taxi before getting in. Locals and tourists use either golf carts or scooters to get around. We recommend getting a group of 4 and renting a golf cart, or if only two a scooter. We have used Ciro’s Golf Cart Rentals. It is usually $55 for 24 hours golf rentals or $45 to return by 5pm. For a scooter, it usually is around $20. It is normal for them to ask you to leave a drivers license as collateral. You won't need it to buy alcohol on the island. Just have a copy of your passport with you for any emergencies

Question

USD vs. Pesos

Answer

USD are accepted everywhere. However, it will be cheaper to pay in Pesos. The easiest way to do this is by bringing USD and exchanging at the ferry dock on Isla Mujeres for the best exchange rate. There are also ATM’s at the banks, 7-11, and the Xpress grocery store downtown in the square. The bank and 7-11 are directly in front of the dock for your convenience. Just notify your bank you will be traveling to Mexico.

Question

Playa Norte

Answer

One of the most beautiful beaches! We recommend Mayan Beach Club if you want to have a beach waiter. Two beach chairs is about 600 pesos ($30) and the money goes towards any food or drinks you order. Another option is to pack a cooler and enjoy for free!

Question

Don't Forget!

Answer

If you happen to forget any toiletries at home, there are pharmacies around the island. There is also a large grocery store in town that will have everything you need. Here are a few "don't forgets" -High SPF Sunscreen- Will be available on the island but very expensive compared to the US. -Handful of $1 & $5 US bills for tipping -Passport and copies of passport

Question

Transportation for wedding day

Answer

Our wedding ceremony and reception will be at Zama Beach Club. We will arrange for taxis to pick up our guest to/from Zama.

Question

Is the island safe?

Answer

Is the island safe? Answer from our wedding planner Jana (from US) who currently lives on the island: Yes! The media paints a very different picture of Mexico than what we are actually experiencing down here. Like all countries in the world, there are parts of Mexico that have problems, and there are parts of Mexico that are incredibly wonderful and safe. We happen to be in one of those great places. We recommend that when traveling (anywhere in the world) you keep an eye on your belongings. The majority of crimes that happen here are crimes of opportunity- you leave your iPhone on the dash of your golf cart, and someone will walk away with it. Apart from that, which can be avoided with just a little common sense, Isla is a really safe and easy island to explore, and we encourage you to get out and see it.

Question

What to expect at Cancun Airport

Answer

After you get off the airplane you will be guided into the immigration line. Give them your passport and your Mexican tourist card (you will get this form either on the plane or after you land). They will stamp both documents. They will give you back your passport and the bottom half of the tourist card. You will need to hang on to this for when you fly home. After picking up your luggage (if you checked a bag) off the carousel, you must go through customs. Hand your form to the official and push the traffic light button. If the red light goes on then you will be sent to the side to have your luggage inspected. If the green light goes on, you are free to go. Once you get past Customs, you will need to find your transportation. There will be a long hallway full of people trying to sell you transfers, as well as time shares. Walk past these people and go outside. Your transportation will tell you what stall # to go to and the driver will be holding a sign with your name.

Question

Leaving the Island

Answer

Your transportation will tell you what time they will pick you up from the Cancun Ferry Dock. You will get on the ferry from Isla Mujeres 30 minutes prior to this time. Make sure you have your passport and your immigration form that was given to you when you arrived. We recommend downloading the app mobile passport to quickly get through US customs.

Question

Golf Cart FYI

Answer

I have heard from a few golf cart shop owners that Isla Police are creating more "check points" for drinking and driving golf carts and you will get a fine. Just like in the states, use your best judgement on how much to drink/who to drive the cart. If you are staying in Playa Norte area (most people are), everything is walkable! Isla also has a lot of one way streets so could be tricky and easy way to get pulled over. Also, only 4 people to cart. If you are planning on drinking a lot, take a taxi! Only a few dollars and your hotel can call one for you. More importantly, we will provide taxis for the wedding so no one will be driving! We have never had this issue and have been to Isla four times. Just an FYI :)
