Venue History

Old Wide Awake - originally located a few hundred yards from where it sits now. Overlooking the Stono River in the 1800s & served as a 24hr store for the Ferry docking on its property. In 1974, William Jarvis bought the home for his wife & 10 kids. Remaining in the family after he passed. In 1992, the kids decided to sell. Parcels of land on the riverfront were divided & sold. Unaware of the history, the owner wanted to tear down the house. The Jarvis sons struck a deal & purchased it back for $1. The home moved to its present spot, still on the land purchased by William Jarvis. The buyer of the waterfront property changed his mind about building, & donated Wide Awake Park to the Town. No one has verified stories about its significance during the Revolutionary & Civil War. However, historical relics have been uncovered. In the early 90s, the home was raised, allowing space under the home. The ivy-covered stairs & archways were built with reclaimed bricks from the original site.
