A girl with a love of agriculture and a vow to live her life near rural Kansas, met a boy from small town Frankfort, Kansas, who had promised himself to move as far from the town as possible. It did not look like a match. Sure, she made him laugh and he made her feel safe, but they were so different. For a while, he did hold to his promise, as just 3 months after starting to see each other, he moved 12 hours (750 miles) away to the western edge of Colorado. Yet, we were determined to make it work. Making that long drive two times a month wasn’t easy. We hit a few bumps in the road- and faced much criticism from many around us. Regardless, Sheldon eventually vowed he would return to his hometown to Cassandra, and the relationship deepened. We were a very unpredictable couple, and defied all the odds of being together and making it work, no matter the distance or struggles placed in front of us. ​Eleven months of falling asleep on FaceTime, numerous hours spent hiking in the desert mountains, overnight drives, 3 am arrivals, and over 75,000 combined miles traveled, Sheldon moved home. In March, we planned our first big trip that was traveled together- rather than to see one another. Sheldon proposed to Cassandra on the top of Sunlight Mountain in Colorado on a spring break ski trip. What would be more meaningful of proposal without returning to the state so much of our relationship was spent? Our journey has been long and unpredictable. Though we have different backgrounds, we are driven towards each other by our desire to learn about and be involved with each other’s lifestyles, our passion for activities, our love for one another, and our enthusiasm to build a family. We are excited for our many special days to come.
