We met when we both worked at Dan O'Brien's in Oklahoma City. We only worked a couple of shifts together before Jonathan was moved to manage Cafe Nova. We had only had about two conversations. The first was about books and how we both loved to read and the second was when he told me I didn't know how to roll silverware correctly. He dumped them all out on the table and made me re-do them! He helped. Then I thought, "hey, this could be something." I went to see him at Cafe Nova a few times and he went to see Jordan a lot at Dans. When he finally asked me on a date I had to verify that it in fact was a date. He wanted to take me to see a movie I kept talking about and I wanted to be sure we were on the same page so I questioned, "like a date?" and he replied, "nevermind!" I told him I was just making sure so that there was no confusion.
We went to Cancun, Mexico for a week. We arrived on a Monday and left early Saturday morning. Tuesday night, we went to the fancy restaurant at our resort. We dressed up, ate, had a really nice time. Then, he wanted to walk on the beach. It was raining and I finally felt clean after being soaked in sweat for two days so I didn't want to go. He kept trying to drag me out into the rain and I was not having it! We ended up getting in a fight about being spontaneous that night. Over the next two days we went to Chichen Itza and did a sailboat snorkeling tour and rode jet skis in the ocean. We shopped at the street markets and ate lots of food and hung out on the beach. Friday night we went to the same fancy restaurant and had dinner. I didn't like the food so I had him take me to another restaurant where I filled my plate with mostly dessert. Afterward, he said he wanted to walk on the beach and say goodbye to Mexico. It wasn't raining this time so I said alright and we walked out. I was being seriously ridiculous waving goodbye to the ocean and actually saying the words, "goodbye Mexico" when he got down on one knee. I didn't know what was happening so I got down in the sand with him! He says, "hey, what are you doing?! I'm trying to propose!" All I remember is saying "seriously?!" over and over again. He said, "yes, seriously now get up!" It took me a minute and I have no idea what he said to me from that point on. He had to ask me if I was going to say yes, and of course I said, "yes"! He gave me his grandmother's pearl and diamond ring and her necklace that holds the diamonds from her wedding ring so we could make our own. As we were walking back to the hotel, he told me that he had tried to propose on Tuesday but I ruined it! We went into the lobby of the hotel where there were at least a hundred guests around the bar and he announced our engagement to the room. Strangers cheered and clapped for us, and I cried per usual. It was the best night.
