We met in the Central 3rd Ward at the University of Utah in early 2016. We went on a few dates including mini golfing and a driving lesson. Neither of us thought too much about it though and we went our seperate ways. Casey served a mission in Mongolia from summer of 2016-2018 and Summer got a little too involved at the business school. Then in January of 2020 we bumped into each other at the institute one day and said “hi”. We continued to bump into each other at other institue activities, including pickleball and speed-dating and eventually went out for grasshopper shakes. March 2020 Spring break and Corona virus hit and our second “first date” was put on hold because Summer had to quarentine. Then on March 31st, we got a classic dinner and a movie (all at home of course). It was full speed ahead from there, quarintine dating included some camping trips, home sacerment Sunday meetings, hiking and a lot of pickleball games.
So if you know me, you know I love puzzles, riddles, scavenger hunts, and murder mystery parties. Casey, knowing me, did all of this and more for the proposal! I knew that the proposal would be on Friday, December 11th after we both finished our semester exams. I didn't know that when I opened my door that afternoon Casey would be standing there in a ghost costume! Haha (he had a sheet on with eye holes cut out and a little frowny face drawn on it). He handed me an envolope labeled "Sorry I Died" and that was the start of the rest of the night! The card I pulled out was a sympathy card, hehe, it said "What are you supposed to do when you lose the person who changed your life?" which is both cute and tragic! The card explained I needed to find 5 fragments to complete the necromancy. Then I got another card with a handwritten rhyme saying, "Start at the place we think we first met..." So off to the insitute we went, a girl and her ghost! I found the next card and it referenced our date night when we went to see Tenet the movie. So we drove to the movie theatre and I had to go into the begining of a live movie to look through the seats for the clue. Suddenly they stopped the movie and the lights came on and the employees were like "what are you doing?" Remeber Casey is still in a ghost costume following me around. We grabbed the clue and made the theatre ghost-free very quickly. That clue took us to a golf course, and the following clue took us to a nicklecade. This clue mentioned "A forgotten child, a mysterious past, hoping to connect through radio ads..." I figured this clue out the fastest. It was Shane Co. where I had picked out my ring. by the time we got there it was dark and late when I found the clue taped up high on the backside of the building. So of course a security guard came and yelled at us. After we explained we weren't jewlery robbers he said "Well you can't blame me, you look shady as hell!" Haha! We totally did! Especially since Casey is a ghost.
Casey took over driving at this point as I had collected all 5 fragments needed from the scavenger hunt. We went up above the Draper Temple (my favourite!) to this lookout he had taken me before he left to Chicago for the whole summer. He asked me to wait a moment before going to our spot. When I walked over, Casey was not in his ghost form anymore but he was lying "dead" on a blanket. There were rose petals and fairy lights on the blanket. From this overlook I could see the whole city in twinkling lights spread out in front of me. There were 3 other people there which were Casey's siblings, Emelie and Orion, and my sister, Aspen. Aspen was recording everything off to the side. Em and O were dressed in black cloaks standing in front of the blanket and inquired if I had the fragements. They directed me to solve the puzzle and once I did, it formed the shape of a heart. Em said that I had returned Casey's heart and could now only wake him up with true love's kiss. After the kiss Casey sat up and started telling me how much he loved me. Casey was so sweet, honest and vulnerable in the way he recounted our relationship and the bond we have. He pulled out the ring and asked that all important question to which I replied "yes!" We kissed. Our siblings shot off poppers of confettii. The moment was wonderful! There were confetti and lights all around us. I got to say "yes!" to eternity with my best friend. I'm happy to share this joy with you. Thanks for reading a part of our love story. -Summer, Bride to be
