We highly recommend that you stay on one of the beaches near the wedding venue such as St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island Beach, Madeira, Reddington Shores, Indian Shores, Indian Rocks Beach, or Pass-a-Grille.
St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island Beach are the closest and they're also the most enjoyable areas to stay.
If you stay on one of these beaches, you don't even need to rent a car as there is a beach trolley and complimentary beach taxis that run up and down Gulf Blvd through all the beaches. Of course you'd have to Uber to and from the airport.
If you stay on Treasure Island, everything is walking distance. We highly recommend Island Inn Beach Resort. It is right on the wedding site and had some of the best rates ($220 and up) we found when calling around. There is also an abundance of Airbnbs in the area. If you like to play it loose, you can often find really good deals last minute as well. The fall is a somewhat slower season in the area so rates should be pretty reasonable.
