When Mitch Met Casey

A Sensible Real-Life Rom-Com

Mitch and Casey met many years ago at the Ritz Theatre Company, where they both worked at the time; he running sound and helping out with other technical elements, and she performing on stage, as well as working in the box office. Because of their slight age difference, she considered herself a fancy working girl just out of college, and thought of him only as a sweet, surprisingly mature kid. Years went by and they lost track of each other, but a chance re-meeting at a party of mutual friends brought them back into each other's consciousness. By this time, Mitch had grown into a handsome young man in Casey's eyes, but alas she was in a relationship at the moment. After becoming reacquainted, they developed a wonderful friendship which was warmed and nurtured by a shared friend group. When Casey's relationship ended, she quietly wondered if this could be her chance to start something romantic with Mitch. Sadly, before she could make her feelings known, he started dating someone else. A few years went by, years that strengthened their friendship, filled with activities that included their shared love of hiking, theatre and haunted attractions (not at the same time, though), and many, many weird online dating experiences for Casey. All along, Casey wondered if she'd missed her chance to be with Mitch forever. Not one to break up her dear friend's happiness, she held her tongue, but promised herself that if she ever had a chance to be with Mitch again, she wouldn't let it pass her by. Eventually, Mitch told her solemnly that his relationship had ended, but that it was for the best. She let him mourn the end of his relationship, and stuck by his side. A few months later, he asked her to be his date to his cousin's wedding "just as friends" and she accepted. Many of his family members assumed she was his girlfriend, and she started out the evening by insisting, "we're just friends", but after a dance or two, they both knew their moment had finally come.

Our Proposal-Part One

Since Casey is a huge Disney fanatic, she secretly (maybe not so secretly) hoped that Mitch might propose when he joined her on a family trip to Disney World. Whenever Mitch would ask her how she wanted to be proposed to, she always said she wanted it to be a surprise, but that her one stipulation would be to make sure it was a semi-private moment, and not in front of a large crowd of onlookers. As soon as Casey got to Disney World, she realized there was no way Mitch would propose on the trip. Where could you have a private moment in a place packed with thousands of people?! Thoughts of a possible proposal left her mind for good, and she decided to enjoy her happy place anyway. The day before their last day in Disney, the whole family was in Hollywood Studios, when Mitch casually noticed that there was a small structure with a sign that said you could meet the character Sully from the movie "Monsters Inc" at certain times during the day. Since Casey has a special love for Sully that is connected to her late and much beloved grandfather, the family agreed to go on a few rides, and then head back to this building in a few hours to get their picture taken with Sully. Unbeknownst to Casey, of course, Mitch had called ahead to let them know that he would be proposing, and Casey's family was in on it.

Our Proposal-Part Two

When they arrived back to meet Sully, there was a pretty long line to have their time with him, but eventually the whole family was ushered into a private room to take pictures with Sully. After the family took some fun photos with Sully, they began to thank him and walk away, when Mitch pulled Casey back and asked her if she'd want to take a picture with Sully just the two of them. Casey agreed, and as they posed for their own picture, Mitch began to talk about how he knew that Sully had a lot of meeting to her, because of his story line with the little girl Boo in the movie, and how that had always reminded her of her connection with her grandfather. Before Casey could even comprehend what was happening, Mitch was down on one knee with her grandmother's engagement ring (that he had secretly procured from her father months earlier) telling her he had chosen this way to propose because he was doing so with the very ring her grandfather had given to her grandmother. Casey was speechless, her family was cheering, and Sully himself was very invested in Casey's answer. Which she apparently forgot to give because she distinctly remembers the photographer saying "So....is that a yes??" The answer, of course, was a resounding YES!
