Casey is from Tacoma, Washington, just next to Seattle. His mum Sara (Schreiner) is from Virginia and his dad Bruce (Kendall) is from all over the USA. Casey wrote films, plays and short stories in high school, and started writing musicals in college. Emily is from London, but was born in Tokyo to her Chinese mum, Angelina (Hsu), and American dad, Stephen (Hall). Angelina grew up in Argentina and Uruguay before moving to New Jersey and going to Rutgers, and Stephen grew up in Evanston, Illinois. Emily is a composer, lyricist, playwright, actor and singer. After moving to the US to go to Wellesley College, she trained as an actor at NYU Graduate Acting. Then, she decided to start writing musical theatre and wanted to figure out how to do that. BMI is a musical theatre writing programme that has been a training ground for some of the greatest Broadway musical writing teams, including Ahrens & Flaherty (Ragtime, Anastasia), Anderson & Lopez (Frozen), and Pasek & Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land). Emily went to BMI as a composer, and Casey went as a lyricist. They fell in love in 2018, thanks to the excellent advice of Casey's best man, Jon Bauerfeld (also a composer in the programme). Now, Casey and Emily have been together for over 5 years, and they live together in Harlem (just off the 2, 3, B, and C lines). And yes, they do write music and lyrics together!
