We met where every millennial couple meets these days, on Hinge. We matched and chatted briefly, but never made plans to meet up. Fast forward to a fateful night in December 2019 when Casey was scrolling through old matches and he came across Boyd's profile. Enamored by Boyd's kind eyes and laugh lines (and emboldened by some liquid courage), he reached back out. Unbeknownst to Casey, earlier that day, Boyd had been lamenting to a coworker (hi, Jonah Wagoner!) about his lack of marriage prospects like an old maid. When Casey popped back up, Jonah pushed Boyd to take advantage of the moment and he agreed to go on a date. Our whirlwind romance almost didn't get off the ground, since we both cancelled the first date, mostly out of laziness. (Editor's Note: Boyd had worked a clopen and was sleepy!) (Editor's Note 2: A "clopen" is a closing shift followed by an opening shift) But we both had a change of heart (in Casey's case with some coercion by Baylor Wickes) and agreed to meet. We met at Strangelove's, a bar in Center City, Philadelphia, on a Tuesday. As a surprise to us both, it turned out to be karaoke night. However, as bars tend to be on Tuesday nights (aka empty), no one was signing up to sing. Instead, we enjoyed the dulcet tones of the emcee singing Madonna song after Madonna song while we got to know each other. Casey dropped his usual first date story about going to Band Camp as a ploy to disarm and enamor his date. However, Boyd went to the opposite route and ruthlessly made fun of Casey for being so lame and Casey was hooked. Conversely, Boyd was hit by Cupid's arrow when Casey started raging about people describing themselves as "nice," which he fervently believes is not a personality type. As the night progressed, we traded jokes and barbs and laughed more than we had in a while. Casey loved how Boyd understood all of his niche pop culture references and how passionately he spoke about music. Boyd loved how Casey had the gentlest smile and was funnier than anyone he'd met before (a title Boyd had held unchallenged for most of his life). We spent hours talking about everything big and small, and ended our date already planning the next one. And we've been making fun of each other ever since.
