Things To Do

Hood River is nestled in the Columbia River Gorge, America's largest National Scenic Area, named so for good reason. The Columbia River Gorge is a world-class landscape where the Columbia River carves a dramatic canyon between the states of Oregon and Washington. So much natural wonder is packed into such a small space that even a short trip to "the gorge" is long enough to be humbled by its beauty. It is known for breathtaking scenery, hiking, incredible farm-fresh dining options, craft beer, and a variety of wines. If you're the outdoorsy type, there's no shortage of options for adventure, and if you're the indoorsy type, it's the perfect place to relax with a craft beer or visit one of the many wineries for a relaxing day of wine tasting in the sun.

Hood River Fruit Loop

The Hood River Valley has a rich agricultural heritage, beginning with the planting of the first fruit trees in 1855, resulting in 14,500 acres of pears, apples, and cherries that cover the valley today. Wander down the 35 miles of scenic country roads, where you will encounter 32 on-the-farm fruit stands, wineries, breweries, cideries, and fields of flowers.

Multnomah Falls

The fifth largest waterfall in the United States, Multnomah Falls cascades more than 600 feet into the Columbia River Gorge below. Located 30 miles from PDX airport, it is actually on your way to Hood River. You'll be able to see it from the passenger side window on your drive along I-84. No hiking is required to view the waterfall (there are great photo ops right at the base of the falls), though there are also options to hike all the way to the top if you'd like to get a workout in!

Hiking around Hood River

Some great Gorge hikes are on Hood River’s doorstep! One of our favorite hikes is Angel's Rest. It has amazing panoramic views of the Gorge and was one of our first dates. If you want more of a challenge with a beautiful view, Dog Mountain trailhead is about 30 minutes from Hood River. Other recommended local hikes and trails in the area: Mitchell Point - a 10 minute from town and has incredible river views. Indian Creek Trail - in Hood River, passing pear orchards and a historic wooden flume. Tamanawas Falls - a 20-minute drive from the city, with a gorgeous waterfall.
