Carrie and Briek met in the outfield in Goodale Park amidst a highly competitive kickball game (narrator: it was not competitive). Carrie had moved to Columbus for work in June of 2016. Briek followed shortly after, moving to town with a small crew of friends from Venture for America that August. By the spring of 2017, the VFA boys had decided it was time to meet some girls and hatched a plan to start a kickball team for the summer. Only one issue: none of them actually knew any women in Columbus. Luckily a friend had a connection and the boys kicked off the season with a full squad. Due to some demanding first jobs out of college, the women had a spotty attendance record and frequently needed subs to hit numbers. Enter Caroline Studebaker, who subbed one week, and never left the kicking lineup again. Briek and Carrie first ran into each other coming out to field on defense, when they both went for first base (we’re still only talking about kickball here). A real life meet cute! Carrie told Briek she had grown up playing first base in softball and that she was taking the bag - Briek grew up playing no baseball whatsoever, figured that was tough to argue with, and trotted out to the outfield. It wouldn't be the last time Carrie made a great point. It was a fast friendship from there on out: kickball in the park turned into a weeknight volleyball league, summer turned into a football fall, and soon enough a friendship turned into dating. Carrie and Briek have been together through so much: career struggles, new jobs, a handful of special years living in the same neighborhood as all their friends. A global pandemic, Briek's first house turned into their first home together. Carrie made trips to Norman, Kansas City, and finally met Briek's family in Belgium. Briek met Carrie's nieces and nephew, owns at least one piece of Buckeyes gear, and has a preferred pizza spot in Dayton. They've helped each other through loss, celebrated wins together, and above all are thrilled and overjoyed to celebrate their marriage with all their friends and family in the city that is so special to their story. We can't wait to see you!
