How It All Started

10.13.17

Phil and I met at the rehearsal for our mutual best friends' wedding - I was the Maid of Honor while he was the Best Man. He arrived late, made a grand entrance, and all the other bridesmaids talked about his cute butt while I chuckled to myself and wondered why he'd wear that particular shade of khaki with a black dress shirt. At the bar after the rehearsal dinner, Phil offered to buy the bride and me a drink. I graciously accepted, and immediately walked away from him upon receiving my drink. We found ourselves in our first conversation later that night, and I decided he was actually pretty cute after all, even if he wasn't the tallest groomsmen. Fate (in the form of Emily, the bride) intervened the next day when we were seated at the same table for the reception, along with our families. We didn't have seats next to each other, but made conversation across the table about our upcoming speeches. When Emily and Jon (the groom) made their rounds at our table during dinner, Emily seized the opportunity to talk us up to each others' parents. It was soon time for speeches and upon delivering mine, Emily grabbed the mic to announce to the entire room that I was, indeed, single and available! If it wasn't clear before, it was very clear at this point what "fate" had in store for me. I would learn later that Phil isn't the best with subtlety, so these overt signs were just enough for him to realize I might be an option. After regaining my composure, I made my way to the dance floor with my family. Soon I noticed Phil dancing closer to me, until he finally grabbed my hand with his to spin me and woo me with his moves. The next day we added each other on every available social media platform before striking up a conversation via messaging and ultimately exchanging phone numbers. After two and a half months of texts and FaceTimes, we had a 5 day long first date when Phil finally came down to Houston. Fast forward two and a half years, and we're getting married!
