Travel Note
The main Block Island Ferry launches out of Point Judith in Narragansett, Rhode Island and operates both a traditional and high-speed ferry. Point Judith is about a 30-40 minute drive from the Providence airport and we recommend calling either an Uber or Lyft as the best mode of transport between the two (should be about a $50 ride). During the high season, there are eight ferries departing to and from each port per day, either via the 30-minute high-speed ferry or the traditional 55-minute ferry. The cost of a round-trip passenger ticket on the high-speed ferry is $50 and $23 on the traditional ferry. While the island is certainly navigable without a car, you may choose to bring your car with you if you are traveling with kids, extending your stay, or just looking to explore the island a bit more. If so, you'll book a car ferry ticket out of Point Judith on the traditional ferry. We strongly recommend that you book your car ferry ticket as far in advance as possible, given that the number of cars allowed per ferry is limited. A standard vehicle round trip ticket is $81. Vehicle reservations for July 2025 are NOW OPEN. More information on vehicle reservations and ferry schedules is available here: https://www.blockislandferry.com/vehicle-reservations/ Parking is available at the Point Judith ferry at independent lots nearby ranging from $10-$20 per day to leave your car for the weekend. Please let us know if you will be flying into Providence and taking the ferry out of Point Judith! Group rates are available, so we can coordinate tickets if a number of our guests are on the same ferry. Similarly, if we have a number of guests arriving and departing PVD at similar times, we will do our best to coordinate vans to and from the ferry/airport to consolidate travel and avoid any unnecessary transportation hiccups. The more we know, the more we can plan for you!
Travel Note
The Block Island Express high-speed ferry operates out of New London, CT during the summer months and gets you over to the island in just about 90 minutes. There are typically six ferries leaving New London for Block Island per day, with the earliest leaving at 8:30 am and the latest departing at 6:30 pm. The standard ticket fare is $33 per person. We recommend booking the ferry in advance, as the tickets for popular times are likely to sell out during the high season, although there is usually flexibility should something come up. Parking at the New London ferry is available to leave your car for the weekend for $15 per day on a first come, first served basis or at the Water Street Garage across the street for $20 per day if the ferry lot is full. Please note that the New London ferry route is only a high-speed passenger ferry and does not operate a vehicle ferry out of this port. If you would like to bring your car along with you for the weekend, you will take the Block Island Ferry out of Point Judith, RI. Depending on traffic, Point Judith is about a 45-60 minute drive from New London. The New London ferry schedule for 2024 is available here for reference (we will update with the 2025 schedule once it is available): https://www.goblockisland.com/Common/Help.aspx?page=schedule
Flight
Providence, RI is the closest airport for those flying in for the weekend - we find that PVD is one of the easiest airports to fly in and out! Most major airlines offer direct flights right to Providence. Travel time from DC to PVD is just over an hour in the air.
Flight
Avelo Airlines is a smaller airline that flies directly to New Haven, CT. Avelo offers a direct flight between BWI and IAD on weekends. Avelo offers very inexpensive flights and is easily the fastest way to travel from the DC area to the Connecticut Shoreline. If you do decide to fly Avelo, you can easily grab a train right from the New Haven train station to the New London train station to board the ferry or take the Amtrak to Westerly to catch the commuter flight over to Block.
Flight
If ferries aren't your thing, no problem. New England Airlines is a small, commuter airline service offering direct service between Block Island and Westerly, RI every hour during the high season. Westerly, RI is directly accessible via Amtrak or is about a 45 minute drive from PVD if you'd prefer to book the commuter flight. The flight is a quick 12 minutes and is $77 one way or $150 round trip. New England Airlines also offers a private charter option to take you right to Block Island directly from nearby major airports, including Providence, Hartford, Boston, or New York. We will note that this airline is weather-dependent and doesn't exactly provide real-time updates (from experience), but if the skies are clear, this is a great option for those who would rather take a "private jet." Reservations are booked over the phone by calling 401-596-2460 between 6:30 am and 5:30 pm.
Train
We love Amtrak. From either NYC, DC, or Boston, take the Northeast Regional or the Acela (if you know what's good) to New London, Connecticut. From the New London train station, the boarding location for the Cross Sound Ferry is right across the street to hop on to the final leg of the trip. From Boston, take the train to West Kingston, RI to catch the Point Judith ferry about 20 minutes away.
