Flight
Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is the most established airport in the region, with a large number of direct and connecting flights from across the US. While it’s a bit farther from Smith Mountain Lake, it often offers the most flight options and competitive fares. RDU is about 120 miles from the lake, which is roughly a 2.5-hour drive.

Roanoke (ROA) is the closest commercial airport to Smith Mountain Lake. Though smaller than Raleigh-Durham, it’s only about 40 miles away — just under an hour’s drive. Flight options may be more limited, but the short travel time makes it a very convenient choice.

Lynchburg (LYH) is another small airport located about 60 miles from Smith Mountain Lake — roughly a 1.5-hour drive. Like Roanoke, it has fewer flight options, but it can be a great alternative if you find a good connection.
