We met in college on the Fourth of July at a lively house party. After striking up a conversation about psychology and our favourite classes, we quickly hit it off and exchanged numbers. Cole casually suggested we hang out sometime, and Caroline responded, “Actually, I’d really like to go on a date with you.” The very next day, we did just that. We grabbed ice cream and sat by the Puget Sound and talked for hours. That first date turned into many more over the course of the summer—long, meandering conversations that made it feel like time stood still. Caroline worked in Seattle for an internship that summer, which meant early mornings and long commutes. Without hesitation, Cole drove her to the bus station at 5:45 a.m. every day. That’s when Caroline realised something important: he was definitely more of a morning person than she was—and if he was willing to sacrifice sleep for her, he must really be in love. Over the school year, we grew closer—spending countless hours together in the library, studying side by side, editing each other's papers, and helping one another prepare for exams. We took turns cooking for each other and sharing our favourites—movies, songs, and go-to restaurants. Cole learned to appreciate coffee and beer for Caroline, and Caroline gave mushy peas a fair shot for him. In the eight years since, we’ve continued building a life together, calling five different cities home and picking up two very beloved cats along the way. We’ve supported each other through grad school, career changes, and all the little pivots life throws at us.
