We did the free walking tour through Civitatis and HIGHLY recommend it! The tour is tip-based — you simply give what you feel is fair to a local guide who actually lives in the Comuna. Comuna 13 is one of Medellín’s top attractions and is located in a very safe neighborhood. Going with a tour is definitely worth it, as the guides share powerful stories and important history along the way — it adds so much meaning to the experience!
We rented a car and explored on our own, but if you’d prefer a guided experience, Civitatis offers some great tour options — here’s a link to one of them! Don’t skip climbing the rock! Yes, it’s a workout, but the view from the top is absolutely worth it. Treat yourself to a cold beer up there and soak in the scenery. If you do rent a car, make sure to visit both Guatapé town and El Viejo Peñol — a replica of the original town of El Peñol, which was submerged to create the nearby reservoir. Both spots are full of charm and history!
Pueblito Paisa is a charming replica of a traditional Antioquian town located on Cerro Nutibara in Medellín, Colombia. It's a popular tourist destination offering a glimpse into the region's culture and traditions, complete with shops, restaurants, a church, and panoramic views of the city.
Located in the heart of Medellín, Plaza de Botero is a must-see! This open-air square features more than 20 larger-than-life bronze sculptures by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The pieces are bold, playful, and perfect for photos. The plaza is right next to the beautiful Museum of Antioquia, which showcases more of Botero’s work along with other important pieces of Colombian art and history. It’s a lively area filled with street performers, local vendors, and a strong cultural vibe — a great place to soak in the energy of the city. How to get there: Take the metro and get off at Parque Berrío Station. From there, it’s just a quick 3-minute walk north along Avenida Carabobo. Tip: Visit during the day for the best lighting and the safest experience.
El Poblado is the place! It’s Medellín’s most popular neighborhood for visitors, with tons of restaurants, cafés, boutique hotels, and shops. Right in the heart of El Poblado is Provenza, a trendy, tree-lined area known for its lively nightlife and great dining. You'll find everything from rooftop bars and cocktail lounges to cozy breakfast spots and Colombian fusion cuisine. It’s walkable, safe, and a perfect home base while you're in the city!
