Because New Orleans is a crescent city built between the river and the lake, we generally say lakeside or riverside instead of north and south. In general the nicest parts of the city are along the river. If you are staying in the city we encourage you to stay river side of St Claude / Rampart, with the exception of streets near Esplanade or City Park. We also recommend the Hampton Inn - French Quarter on Elysian fields.
Our favorites -Croissant D'or in the French Quarter: best cakes in the metro area -Ayu Bakehouse in the Marigny: best pastries
These favorites are all within a block from each other in the bywater -Frady's: Traditional plates and sandwiches. Cash only! -Bratz Y'all: nice german beer garden with delicious sausages -Pizza Delicious: NY style pizza Outside the bywater we like -Budsi's: excellent and fast thai in the Marigny with a nice eat-in restaurant -Fried chicken - Hooks or Man Chu (better if you have a car or order)
French Quarter recommendations: Royal Street has beautiful galleries and museums including MS Rau where you will find Picassos and tables once owned by Napoleon. Closer to N Peters / Decatur you have cafes, bars, and a nice riverside park. There are some nice malls near the Riverwalk that have a movie theater and other shopping, and there is a steamboat that you can take a jazz cruise on If you are looking for jazz in the daytime we would recommend Preservation Hall If you decide you want to go to Bourbon street, our main recommendation is to get a hurricane at Pat O'Briens Outside the quarter Just outside the quarter is frenchmen street: if you like jazz we highly recommend the Spotted Cat The WW2 Museum in the CBD is worth going to if you want to spend at least half a day. It is the largest such museum in America Magazine street in uptown has nice galleries, cafes, bars, and shopping. We recommend the sandwiches at Stein's Deli and the knickknacks at Magazine Antique Mall
