We met in New York City, working for the same luxury gym in the Flatiron neighborhood. Dana heard that Carlos knew how to dance salsa. So on Carlos's very first day of work, she went right up to him and demanded "Do you know how to dance?" He said "Yes". She said "Show me", and pulled him towards the speakers to play some salsa music and dance with her as proof! From then on, our love for dance grew to friendship and then into true love.
Our proposal story is just like any other decision we've made: a decision made together. We had had talks of marriage in general for a while and then later into more details like where or what kind of ring. Carlos settled on wanting to propose with a ring made of coconut, un anillo de coco. He wanted something representative of nature, very natural, and of tropical waters. During our trip to Costa Rica, we joked about looking for one there but one day we found ourselves looking around very seriously! And then we found some "anillos de coco"! But they weren't up to par for Carlos. On our very last day, right before boarding our plane, Carlos and Dana had one more look and then found the perfect ring: simple, elegant, classy - pearls to represent nature and coming from the ocean. So he bought it and hid it in the suitcase. Whilst unpacking from the trip, Dana found the ring! She said "hey! you need to hide this better!" Carlos replied, "just put it on, you know you can't wait!" This may have been true because the ring is so beautiful but Dana didn't want to take it just because. So she told him, "You put the ring on my finger and ask the question." Carlos laughed and asked "Dana Marie Villaluz, will you marry me?" Dana, of course, replied, "yes."
