Alexis sat in her sister's brand-new home around New Year’s 2022, casually browsing Hinge, when she came across a message from a guy who: 1. Wore flannel 2. Liked Avatar: The Last Airbender 3. Enjoyed video essays. The only thing that gave her pause was his declared love of Fernet—not a deal-breaker, but more of an "I must learn more about this man who loves the taste of mouthwash" kind of way. They agreed to meet at Horsies Saloon/Royal Cuckoo Lounge in the Mission District—a cozy little bar filled with knickknacks, Christmas lights, quirky art, a live pianist, and a record player, with bartenders who looked like they’d been snatched from a Wes Anderson film. After a long, easy conversation over drinks, followed by a romantic walk through Dolores Park, that was it. It was like magic. He learned of her love for baking and long walks, while she discovered his interest in and extensive knowledge of Latin and the Classics. They shared mornings with coffee and crosswords and fell in love. Of course, the universe threw some poorly timed health curveballs their way, but their love and relationship only emerged stronger, deeper, and more certain. This love taught them the meaning of "soulmate": being able to be their full selves at all times, feeling as though they live in each other's brains, and experiencing a love that feels both natural and effortless yet powerful enough to drive them to go the extra mile for one another. Whether it’s Carlos making his famous and fantastic breakfasts each morning or Alexis willing to fall asleep without the TV on, they each do what it takes to keep this love strong for eternity.
