We went here for the Unhinged attraction during our first Halloween Season together. It was a great time. The day tour is an amazing example of architectural exploration and powered the San Jose economy during the early 1900s.
We went here on our second date. We spent hours wandering the halls and chatting about the exhibits. (Shout out to Kendall's Post-Modernism-obsessed teacher in college!) Follow up with Boba, movie-theater-food-court Chinese food, and an existential conversation where you completely open yourself up to a near perfect stranger until you close out the building for an accurate recreation.
We went here on our 3rd date in the city to see the Flower Piano event at night. There we wandered, listening to amazing impromptu piano performances, and had two very intoxicated ladies offer us boxed wine from their large tote bags. We didn't accept the kind offer, but we did have a fun time with those ladies playing unintentional wing-women. Cheers to you, tote bag wine ladies, real American heroes.
Driving down Highway 1 through the fog enshrouded Marin Headlands, blaring music and picturing a dinosaur emerging from the mist, to meet Kendall's grandmother for the weekly game of Scrabble. Later, Carlos would become a hana master under Grandma's wild rules.
While other families get up at 3 am to line up for Black Friday sales, Kendall's mother would corral her children into an all-day museum crawl in the city. The De Young is a staple on this day-long art-a-thon. Carlos is grateful for the experience and for having been warned to wear comfy shoes.
Do you like Dinosaurs? Carlos loves dinosaurs! No seriously. You don't understand. He REALLY loves dinosaurs. He probably should have gone into paleontology, but oh well. That's what mid-life crises are for.
A hidden gem of a museum tucked in an unassuming neighborhood in San Jose. A little slice of Egyptian history in the modern Silicon Valley, this museum is a must-see for those who had a Ancient Egypt hyper-fixation phase as a child. (You know who you are...)
Famously home to the bird man and one of the most famous escapes. This historic prison is high on our list of places to visit at night.
A delicious food court in San Jose we have been to several times whilst we lived off Taylor St. Good for a casual hangout, drinks, and food.
Kendall has gotten Carlos really into treasure hunting shows. (Specifically anything with Josh Gates or Phil Torres.) Now Kendall and Carlos spend free weekends treasure hunting for "The Secret." If you know why we started our hunt at this chocolate scented tourist mecca, you know. Maybe someday Kendall and Carlos will find the treasure and get to meet Josh Gates in person.
"Help! I'm trapped in a fortune cookie factory!" But also, they are warm, fresh, and delicious so...bring milk!
One of these days, T'Challa the cat dreams of going escaping his backpack and catching a bird. Then he remembers that being on the leash means he has to walk on his own like a peasant. He would much rather prefer Carlos carry him in his luxurious backpack on walks. Bird hunting remains a dream.
