Elizabeth: Our first date was at my favorite Ethiopian restaurant, Sunset Cafe, in Seattle. Bonus points were already there, given that he knew this hidden gem and suggested we go there! "A white shirt?" I inwardly questioned when I saw him already seated inside. I think my face also made that emotion when I saw that, furrowed brows and a momentary pause in my prance. "Who in their right mind wears white to an Ethiopian restaurant? You eat with your paws!! He is either deranged or brave. Hmmm....bold move, sir. Bold" I found myself thinking, as I wore every color under the sun, because why should I choose only one color?! Conversation seemed effortless and intriguing, and I remember being struck at how comfortable he was with silence, how intentional he was with questions, and how content he was. Then he asked, "how do you Sabbath?"... The Doro Wat nearly fell out of my gaping mouth, and I knew that something was different about him. I was struck at the content and peaceful spirit Carl holds, how intentional he was in getting to know me, and making faith our foundation early on. Carl: We found each other on Match and it was clear that she was a very special bird. She was kind, loving and we shared a faith that God was the most important thing. And whenever I wasn't sure about our future, I would pray and God would always say "yes". It doesn't get better than that. From her first message ("You seem to be pretty strong in your faith, yes? But also quirky. What are some of your hobbies?") to our fist date (Ethiopian at Sunset Cafe - it was one of the most comfortable first dates I've ever had) to hard moments (hurt feelings, scary conversations and growth) to backpacking on the Washington coast (cold, wet, isolated, beautiful) to our engagement (a small, quiet, COVID wildfire-weekend proposal) I have always loved being with Lizzy and I love her very much. And I'm so glad that we keep getting confirmation from God that together is where he wants us.
Welp, the short answer is there isn't really a reason. Back in the day when it was getting late Carl would say "OK, bedtime" and Lizzy would respond "Bedtime for Bonzo" (which, randomly, is a movie featuring a chimpanzee and Ronald Reagan). It was unclear who was Bonzo but the nickname stuck. So we are Bonzo and Bonzita. Why? Because.
