Amalfi coast is the gem of Campania. Narrow streets, art, limoncello, and seafood is there for you, at about just 1 h and 30 min driving from Marigliano. The best towns in the Amalfi coast are: Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Sorrento (where we got engaged). You may notice that these places scream LEMONS!! Try the granita al limone wherever, and the Raki gelato in Sorrento...it’s my favorite!
This may be a dark tourism spot. A great tragedy happened during the Eruption of the Vesuvio in 79 AD. However, thank you the volcanic deposits a lot of the Roman history was preserved. Walk along the narrow Roman streets and visit the old, very old, Roman shops and houses. This is a must if you are in the area. Yes, Vesuvio is still active!
Around Naples, there are three islands: Ischia, Capri and Procida. Capri is the most elegant of the three. A bit pricy though, with similar vibes as the Amalfi coast.
Nominated as the Italian cultural city of 2021, Procida is definitely underestimated among the three islands outside the Naples gulf. With its multicolor houses, it is a vibrant, beautiful place to check if you want to go for a boat ride!
Ischia is one of the three islands off Naples. It is bigger than Capri and Procida and its known for being a natural spa place. Rent a scooter and go around the island visiting the multiple beaches and the natural hot spot of “Baia di Sorgeto” where water at 90 degree C meets the cold(ish) water fo the Tirrenium see. Also, there is a Castle (this is for Emily) called Castello Aragonese!
Campania is known for making the best mozzarella in the world. You should definitely try mozzarella di bufala, even if you go to a small store. Vannulo is the best caseificio in Campania. You can also do a tasting menu with lots of food for $35 pp. If you decide to go, take a look at the Paestum archeological site too. It’s gorgeous!
This place makes the best sfogliatella in the world. What is a sfogliatella? It is a typical Neapolitan pastry filled with a cream made of ricotta and eggs. There is a smooth version (sfogliatella frolla) on the left, and the original versione on the right (sfogliatella riccia). When it’s warm, the crunch of the sfogliatella riccia is the best feeling ever.
