Carey and Cal were both back home in Central PA during the summer of 2018, the last summer before their respective senior years of college. Carey had an internship at a PR firm in downtown Harrisburg and Cal was working at his dad’s cigar stores. Out of curiosity, they both downloaded the dating app Bumble. As fate would have it, Cal was working at the West Shore cigar store and happened to enter Carey’s radius - they both swiped right and matched! Carey had 24 hours to message Cal or the match would disappear forever. After roughly 22 hours…crickets. Sick with thoughts of “what could be”, Cal decided to take matters into his own hands. After a little liquid courage, and a nudge from his friend Peter, Cal tracked Carey down and messaged her on his own. Neither Carey nor Cal had been on a dating app date before meeting each other. A week after exchanging numbers, they had their first date at Duke’s Riverside and were practically inseparable from that moment on. After a summer of love, they made long distance work as Carey returned to Clemson and Cal went back to Penn State. After visiting each other nine times during their senior year, they decided to move in together after graduation. Carey accepted a job in Raleigh, NC, and not long after Cal joined her there. Almost five years to the day from their first date, Cal proposed to Carey on May 27, 2023.
