Bride Caroline Bell Cusack and Groom Michael David Johnson love each other courageously and faithfully; if you’ve found yourself here, reading their wedding website, then you (like me) are witness to a love that has filled hearts with deep joy just to know such a love exists ♥️ Sendin’ all my love, Paige
Shepherdstown, WV has a funny way of bringing people together when they least expect it... for the purposes of this love story, that first happens in 1979 when Michael and Barb Cusack (Dad and Mom of the Bride) met at Shepherd (College); Barb lived in Shaw Hall and Michael lived in Thatcher Hall. The beginning of their love story bodes well for the start of their eldest daughter Caroline’s greatest love story. Caroline (Care / Bride) and Michael (Mike / Groom) didn’t know each other when they both moved to Shepherdstown in 2008 to pursue the next stages of their education at Shepherd University; similar to Care’s parents, she lived in Shaw Hall and Mike lived in Thatcher Hall.
Running around King, German, and Princess Streets and Sandpiper Lane in the same friend group; they were both members of Greek Life on Shepherd’s campus, Mike was a TKE and Care was an AST. Even though neither of them remember when they first officially met, you can find the two of them in the background of photos from all the same themed parties, formals, homecomings, and Greek week events. Neither of them realizing that true love was right under their noses! Some flirtatious banter was exchanged between Mike and Care, back and forth... over a flip cup tournament, studying in the library for an exam, or practicing in the Ram’s Den for a skit... but it wasn’t until Spring Break in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina when the two would grow closer. A distinct memory I have from that trip is that the boys bought a whistle and would use it to call out from the hotel balcony to us girls as we sunbathed on the beach. Mike had called down to tell Caroline what a golden sun goddess she was - in a platonic, playful way - and we teased her that he appeared smitten with her.
One evening the following fall, Mike preformed in the TKE Homecoming skit; he had Care laughing so hard that she began to look at him differently. Later that night as they laughed and quoted silly lines from their favorite show, Mike made his move and admitted he had a crush. However, Caroline had reservations about moving their relationship from a friendly one to a romantic one. It wasn’t until after college that mutual friends of theirs said to her “I’ve never seen you so happy!” when Care finally let her walls down with Mike. The two spent the years that followed discovering their mutual loves and passions for life; needless to say, the two fell totally and completely in love! Mike proposed at Care’s Grandpop’s 80th birthday party. As the party ended inside with cake and presents, Mike (along with help from Shannon, sister and Kelsy, best friend) transformed the front porch to a fairytale escape including candles, rose petals, Christmas lights, a photographer hiding in the bushes, and their song playing in the background. As they celebrated with hugs and happy tears, Care’s Grandad helped with the grand finale by lighting off fireworks in the front yard.
