Ulises & I met at a dance hall called, Cowboys Red River. We both use to go dancing on a weekly basis, he would show up with a group of friends after enjoying drinks at his favorite bar, Stratos, & I would show up either alone or sometimes with a few friends. (Yes, I really wanted to dance all the time so I'd go alone if I couldn't force a friend or two to go with me.) If you've ever heard him tell this story, it has definitely been exaggerated as the years have gone by but this is my version... Ulises loved to dance as well so he was always looking for dance partners & always wanted to learn the newest moves. One day in March of 2016, he says he saw me standing close to the dance floor drinking my long neck of Miller Lite, of course. (What else would I be drinking?) When he approached me and asked me to dance, I had just got my beer and said, "sure." Thinking that he needed to wait for me to finish he waited politely to the side & apparently was in complete shock when I downed my full beer & slammed it on the table. At this point, he always tells everyone that he questioned what he was getting into. But I'm a single girl alone at the bar, so I'm definitely not leaving my beer alone. So, we go out to dance & then go our separate ways. I can't remember if it was that same night but he eventually asked me to dance again. This time, I had to be a little bossy and told him that he needed to glide his feet & stop hopping all around the dance floor. This was also the moment that Ulises became a half-stepper! We continued to dance with each other over the next few weeks, never got each other's names or phone numbers. I always referred to him as the "curly-headed guy" & he always referred to me as "la Guerra." I think it was around two months later that Ulises refused to dance with me until I gave him my number. We started hanging out & going on trips together after that. I even took him on his first flight to New Orleans where he asked me to be his girlfriend.
We went on a family vacation in Cabo to celebrate a few college graduations and my mother’s birthday! Ulises decided to propose on the very last day of our week long vacation which also happened to be my mother’s birthday. I thought we were enjoying a nice private dinner at our resort in celebration of her birthday but little did I know that Ulises was throwing back shots to calm his nerves for his proposal. Once dinner was finished and they were getting ready to bring out the desserts, Tom made a very short and sweet toast congratulating everyone and saying how thankful he was that we could all be together. Apparently, this was Ulises’ cue to go... he was super sweet and also started thanking everyone and congratulating them on their graduations, etc... and then he kept talking. If y’all know my family y’all know we are a very outspoken bunch and it can be hard to get a word in sometimes so I was confused as to why he was still going. He started thanking and talking about me and he pushed back his chair and got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?”
