MET: AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY IN 2009 DATING: JUNE 15, 2013 ENGAGED: APRIL 12, 2019 MARRIED: AUGUST 28, 2020 WEDDING CELEBRATION: AUGUST 27, 2021

Jamaican Wedding Traditions

JAMAICAN BLACK RUM CAKE - Traditionally baked for weddings and carried in procession to the ceremony. Everyone is silent during this procession and the cake is covered in white lace which is then unveiled. We will not be honoring this custom during our ceremony, but you can expect to enjoy some Black Cake at our reception! CURRY GOAT - When you RSVP you will see "Goat" as a meal preference. We will not personally select our goat prior to the wedding as this custom dictates, but a goat that somebody chose will certainly be served as Curry Goat at our buffet! BACKYARD WEDDINGS - Receptions were traditionally held in a marquee in the backyard of the groom. The community helps to build the hut but the groom must not work. Our way of honoring this tradition is by having our ceremony on the outdoor lawn of the venue. TUN T'ANKS SUNDAY - On the Sunday following the wedding, the attendees are typically invited back to the bride’s home after church to partake in further celebrations. We won't be hosting our post-wedding event on the traditional Sunday but we will be honoring the tradition of serving an abundance of food and rum.
