On the very first day of dental school at the University of Washington, Stephanie arrived early for orientation. Shortly after, Cameron came in and sat next to her. Over the next few months of studying, anatomy lab, and waxing teeth in the lab, Cameron and Stephanie became close friends. At first their relationship was platonic, and consisted only of group outings like class ski trips or beach days. However, in the spring of first year, the dental school was planning to have the annual golf tournament. Knowing that each had a love for golf, the two formed a team to play in the event. Cam invited Steph to play a practice round to prepare for the tournament, a sneaky way to ask for a first date. From there, the two found excuses to be around each other more and more. At the end of first year, Cam, Steph and some friends planned a backpacking trip through the Enchantments - a three day adventure near Leavenworth, Washington. During that trip, it became official that they were "exclusive friends." Eventually, the label of boyfriend and girlfriend was applied. With the aid of many pints of ice cream, Cam really helped Steph cope with the stress of dental school, while Steph tried to keep Cam organized. During their relationship, Cam and Steph have faced a few bumps in the road - from car break-ins during vacation to long-distance during residency, but through it all have been thankful to have each other.
In September of 2020, Cam and Steph had planned a trip to Crater Lake, Oregon. Originally, Cameron planned to propose at Crater Lake. However, in the tradition of 2020 chaos, the smoke from nearby wildfires prevented them from accessing their campground, or even seeing 10 feet in front of them. At the last minute, they decided to meet up with Steph's parents in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to try and escape the smoke and play some golf. Sadly, there was no escape to the haze, so during an afternoon golf outing, Cam, Steph, Laurel (Steph's mom), and John (Steph's dad) played the entire time in N95 masks. Little known to Stephanie, Cameron and John were scheming during the round to figure out the best way to surprise Steph with a proposal. Finally, after Steph hit her tee shot (a gorgeous, straight 250-yard drive) on the 18th hole, she turned around to see Cam on one knee, ring outstretched in his hands. Her hands flew up into the air in celebration, reminiscent of her cheerleader past, as she said yes! Needless to say, Steph did not score well on the last hole, but both Steph and Cam felt as though they had hit a hole-in-one!
