Our Story

When Camila decided to enroll in a 2-unit, low-expectation, service-learning class at Stanford at the beginning of her Senior year, the last thing she expected was for it to have lifelong implications. Naturally, being as busy as Camila is, the only local community organization available at the exact time and on the exact days she had room for in her schedule was an organization called DreamCatchers. Miguel, the Program Director of an after-school non-profit dedicated to serving low-income middle school students (aka DreamCatchers), was desperate for some talented Stanford students to help mentor and support his middle-schoolers. To ensure this, he worked with a Stanford professor and his 2-unit, low-expectation, service-learning class… he was sure it was a gold-mine. Camila was of course running late to her first day at DreamCatchers, racing the 2 miles from campus to the program. Walking in, she noticed a professional-looking man in a stunning grey suit towards the back of the classroom. He hurriedly said hello, guiding Camila to her student, who would play a pivotal role in the matchmaking (a story for another day). She eventually drove home and, when at Grove, gossiped about the handsome Program Director, quickly moving on and thinking no more of it. As a Program Director, being on time was important, and it always irked Miguel when volunteers didn't show up with enough time before class to set them up with their students. Camila walked in just in time, wearing her marble leggings and a blue Tri-Delt sweater. In that moment, everything else seemed to melt away as all he could focus on was this amazingly beautiful woman. Trying to compose himself and stay professional, he set her up with a student and pretended to move on with the class… all the while thinking about all those Disney moments of love at first sight. At the end of that year, after too many small stories for this page… Camila was in need of some advice on what to do during her gap year. She asked Miguel for his number so she could learn about affordable living in the Bay Area (as if that exists) and potential job opportunities. Appreciating his wisdom and advice, she even asked him to help with furniture for her new apartment. The day he came over to help build her vanity was the first time she felt butterflies; she knew she was in trouble. With the year wrapping up, Miguel wondered if he would ever see Camila again. She was graduating, he was moving on to a new job, and there would be no reason to stay in touch. To his surprise, she asked for his number! He was eager to make conversation out of anything, even if it was about the weather (and let's be honest, it's always good in California). However, he wasn't sure what he had to offer someone like her… and then, she needed a power drill. The next few months would be challenging for Camila as she applied to med school. Needing some fresh air, she asked Miguel to go on a hike. On August 31st at approximately 10 am, Miguel would pick up Camila for their first hike of the day. What followed would be a 15-hour-long hangout session consisting of two hikes, one 2-mile walk in the heat, Five Guys burgers, laying on the grass at a park, and an order of strong Mai Tai's (which Miguel had warned her about). And like any good Disney movie… the first kiss was pure magic. Miguel's amazing flirting (terrible flirting if you ask Camila) finally paid off! She had asked him to go on a hike, which was clearly supposed to be a date. He picked her up and proceeded to have the best and worst day ever. He got on her nerves on more than one occasion, recommended a long walk in the heat with no water, laid in a park on itchy grass, and yet he still decided to ask her for drinks at a local Hawaiian restaurant. By the end of the night, all he wanted was a magic lamp to grant him a wish; that this fantastic day would never end. And as it turns out... wishes do come true!
