The Brazilian currency is called Real (plural is Reais). Currently, 1 US dollar corresponds to anywhere between 5.15-5.70 Reais. Most major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are widely accepted, but it is good to carry cash for small vendors, transportation, or tips. Cash can be exchanged at currency exchanges at the airport.
Tipping is not required like in the US, but it is appreciated. Many restaurants automatically include a 10% service charge in the bill. For taxis and other services, rounding up or offering a small tip is appreciated.
You can use Uber in Fortaleza as usual. If desired, you can also rent a car from the airport. Note that Brazil has a 0 tolerance law for drinking and driving, meaning driving with BAC over 0.0 is considered illegal. There will be provided shuttles between the hotel and wedding events.
Yes! Most major US cell providers have partnerships with Brazilian carriers. You will need to let your provider know you will be traveling and some will be able to provide you data, text, and calling for a small fee. Or you can get a sim/e-sim card when you land in Brazil. If you want to be proactive, you can download Saily, an eSIM provider, and purchase and activate plans prior to departure. Referral code will get you $5 off. CARTER4322
November is Fortaleza is hot, sunny, and breezy, with daytime highs around 85°F(29°C) and little chance of rain. Nights are warm and comfortable. Pack lightweight closing, sunglasses, swimwear... and don't forget the sunscreen - you'll definitely want to enjoy the beaches Fortaleza is known for.
Brazil uses type N plugs with a voltage of 220V. We recommend brining a universal adapter, and double check non-charger electronics(Phone, laptop, etc.) like blow dryers and curling irons to make sure they are compatible. We recommend purchasing a few adapters on Amazon or any other retailer prior to travel.
Fortaleza is in the Brasilia Time Some (GMT-3) and it does not observe daylight savings time. In November, Fortaleza will be 3 hours ahead of US Central Time.
Hey guys! English will be spoken at your hotel and at a few restaurants, but it is not common. So here's some quick tips :) Pull out your Google / Apple translate when needed -- Locals are friendly. Anyways -- here's your first Portuguese lesson: (Hi = Oi, Thank you = Obrigado (for men) / Obrigada (for women), Please = Por Favor), and when in doubt just say "I don't speak Portuguese = Nao falo Portugues" -- or pray I'm around to save you in a pinch :)
Yes, Fortaleza is safe! Like any major city, there are parts to avoid, however the areas around the venues, hotels, and popular restaurants and shops are safe and welcoming to walk around in. We recommend using travel common sense, avoid showing valuables, jewelry, technology, and cash in public. Trust your gut and enjoy the city!
Do not drink tap water. We recommend sticking with bottled water. It is abundant and inexpensive.
