We met at our small Christian school in Newberg, OR after the Stephens returned from a mission in Indonesia. We became good friends and were around each other a lot but it wasn't until we became science partners sophomore and junior year that we realized how well we worked together. At a campfire in May of 2020, Kalem asked me to be his girlfriend and we've been going strong ever since.
Kalem and I had been dating only a few months when he traveled to Montana to spend the summer with his grandparents on his mother's side. He toured the Montana State University - Northern campus' diesel program and called me that night that we were moving to Montana so he could be a diesel tech. I thought this was crazy. When the time came to get serious about school, I decided, however, he was too good to let him go alone. Kalem will be starting his second year at MSU-Northern after the wedding and I will be finishing an associate's in business.
After moving to Montana last summer, I started pestering Kalem when he was going to propose. We decided it would work best to propose around Thanksgiving or Christmas because that would allow us to celebrate with our parents and siblings. This disappointed me as I was eager to be engaged to my best friend, but what could I do? On Friday, September 30th, K and I drove out of town to go for a hike. We climbed high plateaus and through little valleys. Kalem disappeared from my sight for a minute and I heard him calling a moment later. I climbed up a hill, where he pointed out at the view of rolling hills. He hugged me from behind for a moment, and stepped back. I heard him say "Cameron", and I turned around. He had a little blue box in his hands and was down on one knee. After celebrating, we hiked back to the truck and drove back into town because he said he had another surprise for me. We arrived at his grandparents house, where he was staying, and from the entry way his grandma greeted us. "I have a new granddaughter?!" She said. As I climbed the stairs, Adria, Evan, and my parents and K's parents filed out of the kitchen.
For the next few summers we will be following internships with different diesel companies. This could take us a number of places out of college. We will be living in family housing provided on campus during the school year.
