Cal and Madeline first met in the fall of 2017 through a club in their shared dorm building. The club met weekly to watch Studio Ghibli movies. One night, Cal and Madeline both brought chocolate milk to the club meeting, and Madeline said, "Chocolate milk cheers!" to which Cal responded with nothing (because he was very shy). (Madeline regretted that.) (They didn't talk to each other again for a few months.)

When they had dinner together with mutual friends after Christmas break, Cal made a reference to an old Disney TV show that Madeline thought was very funny. And that was the moment - she was smitten. (Turns out, Cal was too!) However, because they're both so shy, it took a few months and some meddling from friends for there to be a first date. But a first date happened - at Starbucks, naturally - where they realized how easily conversation flowed and how similar their senses of humor were. They've been laughing together and in love ever since. (Fun fact: Before the first date, Cal was not a coffee drinker. But he started drinking it because Madeline loved it, and it reminded him of her. Now he can't go a morning without it.)

After four and a half years of dating, being cat-parents of three, and moving to a new town together, Cal proposed to Madeline on a picnic in October 2022.
