American citizens are able to travel freely between the US and South Africa as they have been able to do, even with the bans in place subject to presenting negative PCR tests. United and Delta continue to fly into and out of South Africa.

COVID Travel Requirements

.....

TO SOUTH AFRICA: proof of a negative RT-PCR or PCR test taken 72 hours before departure time. NOTE that you might be required to present the negative results prior to boarding your connecting flight to the US airport you will be departing from. RETURN TO USA: passengers travelling to the US require a negative antigen test or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) taken the day before travel. If you do a home test, you will need to do it via a telehealth visit and the medical professional will need to send you a letter confirming your result.
