Will and Cali were on a trip to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Cali was 99% sure Will was going to propose on this trip, but then, as the end of the trip approached, she thought it wasn’t going to happen. The couple had stayed at another lighthouse and seen other sunrises throughout the summer. They had been to so many beautiful places and Will had planned so many fun surprises. Thus, nothing seemed fishy to Cali when Will wanted to watch the sunrise from the top of the Little River Lighthouse in Cutler, Maine. The couple just rolled out of bed at 4:50 am, with Cali thinking she would be back in bed sleeping in 30 minutes or so. She even tried to convince Will to see the sunrise the next morning instead. When the couple reached the top of the lighthouse, they faced an onslaught of mosquitoes. Will started putting on bug spray, which he never does, but Cali refused to do so because she was going back to bed right afterwards and didn’t want to have to wash off the spray. Instead, Cali started walking in circles around the light so the mosquitoes couldn’t land on her. Will started walking in circles behind her to make sure that she couldn’t see the ring box in his shorts as she walked by. The couple decided to finish watching the sunset inside the light room. When it was officially sunrise and the sun started to appear above the horizon, Cali was too busy itching her new bug bites to notice. Will encouraged her to stand up and watch, so she did. Will started talking about Kalaloch (in Olympic National Park on the WA coast) and how it is special to Cali: how you can see the Destruction Island Lighthouse from the Kalaloch Beach, how Kalaloch has one of the last sunsets in the contiguous United States, and how Maine hosts the nation's first sunrise. At this point, Cali is still clueless and thinking Will is just being Will with his fun facts. Then he begins to talk about how Cali says she like sunsets better because she likes how they end, and you know when to stop watching (when it gets dark). Will says he likes sunrises because they last forever, just like he and Cali will. Cali is still thinking "how cute," but is not suspicious because Will is always saying nice things. Then Will starts pulling something out: it is a ring box, and he proposes. Cali says yes! Then the couple went back outside and the mosquitoes were somehow gone. They sat and talked for 4 hours watching wildlife and the tide. Then Cali called her mom, but there was no answer. I knew she knew and everyone basically knew. That would make her more likely to be right next to her phone ... so why wasn’t she answering? Cali didn’t want to tell any other family members about the proposal until she talked to her mom. Will wanted to get ready and wanted to wash the bug spray off. Cali climbed in bed and decided to read her book before she took a nap. Then all this knocking started. It was Cali's mom, Aunt Juli, Aunt Teri, and Will’s dad. Cali was shocked!!! She told her mom, "I knew you wouldn’t just ignore my calls!!" Cali's mom had a "Go Pro" strapped to her chest because Cali's dad had asked for it. Then, the whole crew just enjoyed a day together on the island! Wills dad took photos and the lighthouse keeper made two drone videos of the island for Will and Cali. Whenever Cali sees a sunrise, she says, "Hi, Grandma!" because her Grandma loved sunsets and sunrises so much. Cali's Grandma felt like sunrises were special and hung the picture of Pat's sunrise (the sunrise after Cali's uncle died) on the wall. Thus, Cali always thinks of sunrises as her Grandma saying hello and reminding her that she loves her. Will knows this, so it was extra special he proposed at sunrise with her diamond. Cali also told Will that she would know he was going to propose when he shaved because he always did that before a nice event, so Will said he couldn’t shave for the proposal.
