Jaymes and Elliot became inseparable through most of their formative years, joining each others family on more than a few family vacations. Elliot has long been considered the 5th child of the Grider clan.

Steven grew up across the street from Elliot. The Gryczka household could be likened to a sort of Grand Central Station, if you know what I mean. Mrs. Gryczka would watch all the neighbor kids after school until their parents got home. Elliot has known Steven for so long, he can't even remember the first time they met. They've just always known each other. Much like family.
