Caleb and Valerie met when she and her sister went on an impromptu trip to the SW. When Valerie first saw Caleb in his guide shop, she was immediately smitten. She tried to flirt with him, but he didn't get the hint, so she rented gear from him to hike the Narrows and told herself she would work up the courage to ask him out when she returned the gear. The next day, she went back to the shop and he wasn't there. She considered leaving a note with her number, but decided it wasn't meant to be. The next day, Valerie was heading to the airport to fly home and when she checked her email, she had an unexpected message from Caleb! He took her email address from her rental agreement form and wrote a sweet email about how nice it was to meet her and to come by the shop if she was ever in town again. A month later, they went on a climbing trip to City of Rocks where they climbed for 5 days and got to know each other, creating a spark that they would both later confessed, felt like love. The following months were filled with calls, emails, trips to the Oregon coast and a two week vacation to Nicaragua.
