We met at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Sarah was working on a Transitional Care Unit (TCU), and Caleb was finishing his Chaplain Residency. He often visited patients in ICU and TCU. At the time, SSM had just lifted its COVID-19 mask requirement for staff and visitors at each ministry, and Sarah noticed Caleb's attractive beard. One day soon after the mask requirement was lifted, Sarah commented on Caleb's beard while she was talking to coworkers at the TCU nurses' station. A couple days later, one of her coworkers informed Caleb that someone had secretly given him a compliment. Caleb was immediately curious about what was said, so he asked for more information. He discovered that Sarah had given him the compliment. That knowledge made him even more curious, and he felt the need to find out what was said. Caleb found Sarah at the Charge Nurse's desk at the end of her shift and asked her, in public view of all the TCU staff, to reveal her compliment. Despite feeling very caught off guard, Sarah replied, deciding she had nothing to lose, and said she appreciated Caleb's work with patients and she also liked his beard (all the while, smiling through her mask and giving him two thumbs up). Although she had given him a compliment, Caleb assumed she was only interested in being friends, and he walked away, much to her dismay. She expressed her shock and embarrassment to her coworkers shortly after, saying, "I shit the bed!" In the coming weeks, Sarah's coworkers began either calling Caleb to give him tips about talking to her, or suggesting at the nurses' station that he should make a point to speak to her while she was working. Caleb was utterly perplexed by how things were unfolding, and it took a little while for him to get the hint. In fact, Caleb will confess that when he found Sarah on Facebook, he was blown away by her beauty. The chemistry was there, but Caleb needed coaxing from others to ask Sarah out on their first date. Finally, his chaplain colleagues encouraged him to call Sarah's work phone and ask her out. When Caleb called the TCU nurses' station, the Charge Nurse promised to call him back when Sarah was finished with work assignments. At last, Sarah arrived at the nurse's station and when Caleb spoke to her on the phone, he said, "I feel like there's a vibe between us and I just wanted to ~clarify~ what's going on. I'll give you my phone number and you can text me your name if you'd be interested in going out for coffee. But no pressure!" Much to Caleb's surprise and delight, Sarah texted him, and they set up their first date, which turned out to be an incredible time together at Blueprint Coffee, and later, at International Taphouse in the Delmar Loop. Our first date was quite special for both of us. Caleb often describes it as a “knock out of the park” first date. One of Caleb's questions during our first date was, "What does grace mean to you?" This question opened the door to the core of our relationship, which is our love for Jesus. Our faith has been central to knowing each other and falling in love, and filling our Sunday mornings with Mass at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, followed by a service at MiddleTree Church in St. Louis was one of our favorite ways to spend time together while dating. Caleb proposed on April 12, 2025 in one of our happy places - the Lake of the Ozarks. He deceived Sarah into thinking he was working (and on call) all weekend while she went away for a Bible study retreat. While there, the girls planned to have a photo shoot to commemorate this special time in life. As it turns out, there was a secondary plot behind this photo shoot… And when Sarah walked out onto the deck of the lakehouse where they were staying for the weekend, there was Caleb, gussied up in a suit! He dropped down on one knee, she said yes, and the rest is history! We can’t wait to celebrate with all of you and party like never before!! Bring those dancing shoes!
