How They Fell In Love

A Van Down By The River & Living Out Of A Backpack

The first time they met, Caleb was hanging out in his dark room and Kenzie was on a date with his roommate. Their first impressions of one another were, "I hope this guy is okay. He's just chilling in a dark room on a Friday night..." and "No need to get to know this girl. My roommate will just have a new one over by next week". Soon after, the roommate came to the conclusion Caleb and Kenzie would be a much better match and plotted for them to get to know each other better at a Sunday BBQ. Little did they know that just over a year later they would be in love and preparing to start a life together! After that BBQ, Kenzie pestered Caleb for over a month trying to get him to come hangout with her and her friends. He thought she was being super interested and forward. She thought he spent all of his time in a dark room and could use the social outings. Eventually, he caved and showed up for a movie night of Kenzie's favorite movie but was late. After it ended and everyone went their separate ways, Kenzie insisted they start it over so that Caleb could see it from the beginning. They ended up distractedly talking through the entire movie and kept talking until they heard birds chirping and noticed the sun coming up. They had accidentally talked nonstop for over 8 hours! They had their first kiss the next day and spent as much time together as possible until a week later when they had to go their separate ways. Kenzie was off to Africa and Europe for research studies and a backpacking trip. Caleb drove away in the van he had fixed up to live in while he worked in California for the summer. Their time together had been fun but they didn't know if it would go anywhere and were each most excited for their summer plans of romance-free adventure. During their summer apart, they couldn't help but keep in touch despite their intentions to give one another space. A few texts a day turned into long FaceTime calls and endless communication. They couldn't get enough of each other and came to realize that although they were each living out big bucket list items, they wished they were checking them off along side the other. They couldn't wait to see each other again. The timing of their reunion couldn't have worked out more perfectly. The exact day Kenzie landed back in Utah after her time abroad, Caleb had returned to Utah for a friend's wedding. They spent the next three days together until Caleb had to head back to his van life in California for work. They had plans to see each other again a few weeks later but after just a week, the two self proclaimed "independent" free spirits couldn't take it anymore. Caleb came across cheap flights from Utah to California and bought one so Kenzie could join him for a weekend adventure. Off they went bouncing from beach to beach as they made their way from LA to San Diego to Tijuana, and back! Although they still hadn't said it, they knew they were falling in love. They felt it while sitting on the beach. They felt it sitting outside of the Tijuana temple. They felt it even while simply eating drive-thru food. That goodbye at the airport seemed to signify the beginning of something more serious and happy than either of them had anticipated when they first met 5 months earlier. After the California trip, Kenzie drove up to Northern Montana to tend to her cousins for a couple of weeks. She was with the kids at their grandparents' cabin- aka her heaven on earth. Caleb met her there as soon as he finished his summer job and they began their second roadtrip of the summer. It started with a few days at that cabin. During their time there, Caleb accidentally let it slip: He told Kenzie he loved her while they were laying on the cabin's swimming dock and looking up at the stars. Kenzie said it back the next in a quiet corner of a vintage shop as they were shuffling through old books. They fell in love the same way they intend to keep their love alive; through prioritizing adventure and experiences.
