Some people call it destiny, or fate, but we like to think of it as a spark, a pivotal moment of connection that changes the course of our lives forever. For us, that spark happened in the late spring of 2011. It all started over a game of “connect” at Marist Freshman Orientation. Kyle said he liked to snowboard, Caitlin said that she could ski. Kyle compared the blond hair on his arms during the summer to Caitlin’s bleach blond hair – and somehow… there was a spark. For Kyle: “We were really hitting it off, and definitely not making quirky conversation at all. She’s small, so naturally, I had to pick on her height and tell her that she could fit in most overhead compartments (Austin Powers) then rattle off a bunch of other movie quotes - many of which Cait still refuses to watch to this day. I was truly a gentleman - I offered her my sweatshirt in the freezing cafeteria, despite being cold and blatantly ignoring the poor shivering girl next to me. After spending all day talking, we were separated at the final event. Panic sank in, I thought to myself will I ever see or talk with her again (it's very easy to lose that tiny blond girl in a crowd). How would we stay in touch, I don't even have her last name? Clearly there was only one option, I passed my phone down to each member of our orientation group and asked them to add their name to a notepad so that we could stay in touch on Facebook, not suspicious at all. It was a big success.” For Caitlin: “I remember running back home and telling my friends that I found my person. He messaged me the next day on Facebook and there was some small talk. Then…he ghosted me for the rest of the summer. Flash forward to the first day of college, and I run into Kyle at a meeting in the Leo dorm (apparently he was not supposed to be there, but that’s a story for another time). And that spark is still just as strong. When we were together the conversations didn’t end, and within a week, we started dating.” You may be thinking sheesh that’s quick…until you remember this was 12 years ago. After over a decade growing together, we can’t wait to finally make it official and celebrate the beginning of the next chapter in our forever.
