While in the city, keep your eyes peeled. Most of the following attractions are on the historic Route 66!
Come check out Cait's family roots (and where Al dreams of lasagna and cannolis). The Hill is a long-established Italian-American neighborhood with family-owned delis, sandwich shops and bakeries on Marconi Avenue, and trattorias, pizzerias and upscale Italian eateries dotting the streets around Shaw and Wilson avenues. Enjoy the neighborhood and it's delicious stores in a beautiful afternoon. The “Italian Immigrants” statue stands outside St. Ambrose Catholic Church, and locals gather to play bocce at Milo’s Bocce Garden and in neighborhood parks.
A popular St. Louis destination since 1954, Grant’s Farm is the 281-acre ancestral home of the Busch family, named for Ulysses S. Grant who originally worked a portion of the land. Here you will be able to get up close the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, see Grant's cabin, tour the Bauernhof, and much more. Parents, there is free beer tasting as well! Ranked in 2004 as a top attraction nationwide by the U.S. Family Travel Guide Zagat Survey and two time winner of the TripAdvisor.
Our favorite late night snack when in St. Louis. We can never decide what flavor to get so we always come back for more. Ted Drew's is best at night when it is lite up and the crowds have come for miles to enjoy the best frozen custard. Enjoy!
A long standing family tradition for Cait, Donut Drive In is located across the street from Ted Drews. After your Friday night frozen custard, head to Donut Drive In to get a Chocolate Long John (Midwestern term) for your Saturday morning!
City Museum is a museum whose exhibits consist largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects, housed in the former International Shoe building in the Washington Avenue Loft District of St. Louis. Fun fact! Al's first adventure with Cait's dad Chris, and sister, Lexi, was at the City Museum where everyone crawled, slid, swung, squeezed and shimmied around the museums's multi-stories for hours.
Anheuser-Busch, possibly what started it all. The only beer both Al and Cait enjoy. A stop to the brewery is a great way to see the original Anheuser-Busch story and taste-test a few samples at the end! Opened in 1852, St. Louis is our flagship brewery, the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch and the Home of Budweiser. The brewery is remarkable for its beautiful interior and has been offering tours to customers since the 1890s. Led by General Manager Jim Bicklein and Brewmaster Natalie Johnson, St. Louis brews over 25 brands, including Budweiser, Bud Light, Bud Select, Select 55, Natural Light, Busch, Busch Light and several other American style lager beers.
Before or after your Anheuser-Busch Brewery tour, stop by Gus’ Pretzel Shop, located in the Benton Park neighborhood on St. Louis’s south side, in the shadows of the world-famous Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Chris would take Cait and Lexi to Gus' when he needed to go into the office on a weekend. A deliciousness snack that can't be beat! Gus’ Pretzel Shop is a family-owned business that has been using the same recipe and method of making pretzels, including twisting each pretzel by hand, since the business started in 1920. Third-generation pretzel twisters, Gus Jr. and David, are preparing the fourth-generation, Gus III, to carry on the same tradition.
Every St. Louis child's dream field trip! The Saint Louis Science Center, founded as a planetarium in 1963, is a collection of buildings including a science museum and planetarium in St. Louis, Missouri, on the southeastern corner of Forest Park.
While in college in Florida, Cait had her family ship her P’Sghetti’s or required them to travel with it on dry ice every time they visited her. A small “mom and pop” sandwich and pasta joint. Try the pizza bread, garlic bread, pasta, everything. Trust us!
An Eastern Europe pastry that sells out fast! Arrive early for the best selection of Kolache.
The first trip as a baby out of the house Cait had! Amy took Cait to Rich and Charlie's and years later, Cait took a summer job there as a waitress. Make sure to try the toasted raviolis (a St. Louis speciality!) Cait's favorite is the cheese pizza or baked mostaccioli!
"The square beyond compare!" The Original St. Louis-Style Pizza! Imo's has many locations, so no matter where you are in the city, you can find a location! Pizzas are topped with Provel cheese. What’s the Deal with Provel? Cheddar, Swiss, and Provolone combined into one gooey, creamy, deliciously cheesy experience. Provel was originally invented in St. Louis, back in 1947. Its origins are debated; however, it’s theorized it was a convergence of Old World Italian traditions and New World technology. Wherever its roots, it is now deeply ingrained into St. Louis’ culinary identity.
Recently opened, the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station is located inside St. Louis' historic train station. Union Station opened in 1894. The station saw some of its highest traffic during the World’s Fair of 1904 and World War II. The Grand Hall is so beautiful, it was considered as the reception venue of Cait and Al's wedding!
