We know this may be a long trip, which is why we selected a long weekend. Options to get to C'Ville include planes (Airport code: CHO), trains (Amtrak code: CVS), [buses], and automobiles. For folks who may not be able to get a direct flight to C'Ville, we'd suggest Richmond's airport (RIC) and either ride sharing or renting a car. Renting a car may be particularly useful if you'd like to find a way to enjoy Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge while you're here.
We suggest you stay in downtown Charlottesville. Since it's Labor Day and the weekend of UVA football game, hotel blocks have been impossible. However, there are many hotels and Airbnb options within walking distance, and we suggest you make a reservation as soon as possible.
