All I could focus on was the crunch of car tires on the cobblestone road as I stood awkwardly on the corner of Thames and South Ann Street. Outdoor patrons of The Point in Fells resoundingly enjoyed an evening out in a world just emerging from being sequestered indoors. The rush of noises blended together, socking me in the face as I waited for what seemed like hours. It was really just a couple minutes. Then it happened. A gentle tap on my left shoulder. A deep breath. A left turn. A smile. “Are you Kenny?” she asked. Her voice was so gentle and warm. I don’t know if there’s such thing as love at first sight — but it was a good start. One date led to another. Then another. Then, before we knew it, Sara was living in my 600-square-foot apartment less than two months later as we isolated after a positive COVID test. We survived as roommates, even when every conversation gleaned more information about one another. Another good sign. Looking back, it shouldn’t be surprising. It’s always been easy. Even as we’ve navigated life, tragedy and difficult conversations, never once have we struggled to figure it out as a team. That corner in Fells Point brought me my greatest gift. It’s now cemented in our story. Across the street from where Sara first tapped my shoulder is where I proposed. It’s where we finished our engagement photoshoot. It’s where we’ll do our first look the day of our wedding. And you all can share in the joys that The Point in Fells has brought us by celebrating there at the welcome dinner the night before our wedding. Our story is just starting. I’m the writer, of course, which is why this is from my perspective. But a writer could never ask for a better subject. Together, we’ll keep adding chapter after chapter.
