How We Met

From wreckage to romance

We first connected on Hinge when Scott noticed Grace’s mention of her obsession with Great Lakes shipwrecks, particularly The Edmund Fitzgerald. A shared fascination with history and a little curiosity about each other turned a simple swipe into hours of conversation, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Our First Date

A recipe for happily ever after

Scott made the hour drive from Brunswick to Grace’s apartment in Kent for their first date. He cooked tacos from scratch while Grace whipped up ice cream sundaes for dessert. They spent the evening laughing together, especially at Cunk On Earth, and quickly realized that good food, sweet treats, and shared laughter were the perfect recipe for a connection that would last a lifetime.

The Proposal

From floating docks to forever

Scott started the proposal with a little bit of careful scheming. He texted Grace’s mom and asked to meet, while telling Grace he was going to Bass Pro Shops while she was work. In reality, he met Grace’s mom, dad, and sister Claire for lunch. At the table, he asked her dad for permission, and her dad playfully motioned to her mom and sister, saying, “Ask them.” Claire shrugged and said, “I guess so,” and Grace’s mom handed Scott her own mother’s ring, while quietly crossing her fingers. The next day, Scott told Grace they were taking a trip to Punderson State Park, claiming he didn’t have work because of construction at his job. In truth, he had taken the day off. He borrowed golf umbrellas from a coworker, and they headed out into a rainy, misty morning. Grace had a tiny suspicion that something might happen, but Scott’s just weird enough she could write it off. When she asked if she should touch up her nails the night before, he feigned ignorance. When she asked what to wear, he acted like he had never heard of clothes before. And yet, the clues kept adding up: umbrellas in the rain, a morning spent outside, and his unusual quirks. They wandered the park together, watching the mist rise off the lake. Finally, Scott led them down onto the floating docks. He set down the umbrella in the pouring rain and said, “The happiest I feel is when I am with you, and I want to feel this happy for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?” Of course, Grace said yes.
