New Orleans receptions are typically not seated dinners, but consist of heavy passed items at the start of the reception, open action stations and buffets, with emphasis on lots of food options, lots of beverages, and a highly dynamic and social atmosphere that allows guests to move freely about the reception space. Seating is left open for guests to choose their own seats and tables.
Second lines are a popular tradition among New Orleans weddings. At a wedding, it signifies the beginning of a new life together. A brass band leads the bridal party and the guests from the reception on a parade down the streets. The newly married couple leads the second line holding uniquely decorated umbrellas or parasols. The guests form a line behind the band to dance to lively music with handkerchiefs or cocktail napkins in hand! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes!
We have reserved room blocks at both the Bourbon Orleans and St. Pierre hotel. Please visit the "travel" tab for more information on these hotels. There are an endless amount of hotels in New Orleans. We recommend staying in the French Quarter as all wedding events will be walkable from here. Please keep in mind that while Air BnBs are a great option, they are technically not permitted in the French Quarter, so you will most likely be in another part of the city. If you have any questions about the location of where you are looking to stay, we are happy to answer any questions!
We do not recommend renting a car. Parking and driving in the French Quarter can be difficult. The welcome party and wedding are all walkable if you stay in the French Quarter. The street car can take you to different parts of the city, such as Uptown or Mid-City. Ubers and Lyfts are also easily accessible to explore the city. We recommend Lyft over Uber in New Orleans as there are more cars and it is typically cheaper.
