Tips for European Travel

Question

Credit Cards:

Answer

Visa is widely accepted in most places. If you don’t already have a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, consider getting one before your trip—it can save you money. American Express is not accepted everywhere, so it’s best to have a Visa or Mastercard as your primary card.

Question

Cash

Answer

If you want to get euros before you travel, order them from your bank at least a week in advance. Banks usually offer better rates than airport exchange counters. If you prefer to get cash after you arrive in Europe, use your debit card at a major bank ATM. Just be sure you know your bank’s daily withdrawal limit, and keep in mind it’s usually in dollars—so account for the exchange rate.

Question

Packing

Answer

Pack light! European streets often have cobblestones, and many older buildings don’t have elevators. Dragging a heavy suitcase around can be exhausting. For shoes, bring something you’re comfortable walking long distances in (think 10,000+ steps a day). Sneakers or supportive walking shoes are your best bet. For the wedding, pack a pair of comfortable flats or sandals for walking between venues. Europe uses a higher voltage than the US. Any electronics you bring like hair dryers, curling irons or steamers will only work if they’re dual voltage. For phones, tablets, and laptops, you’ll just need a European plug adapter (a simple two-prong one works fine).

Question

Water

Answer

Staying hydrated is important, especially when walking around all day. Bottled water can be harder to come by than in the U.S., so grab a couple of bottles at the airport when you land or head to a local grocery store once you arrive.

Question

Panhandlers & Pickpockets

Answer

Be cautious on busy streets. If someone tries to hand you something—like a flower or toy—politely decline and keep walking. It’s often a way to ask for money. Street performers can be fun to watch, but they sometimes attract pickpockets. Keep an eye on your belongings. Use crossbody bags or bags that zip securely, and avoid keeping wallets or phones in your back pockets. It’s best to leave your passport at your hotel in a safe place. If you feel you need it with you, take a clear photo of the ID page instead.
