We met on move-in day our freshman year of college. Bruce lived at one end of the hallway, and Zoe lived at the other. From the first day, everyone on our hallway hung out together most evenings after class, and Bruce would often have a chessboard with him. Most people weren't interested in playing, and so one day Zoe volunteered. That game of chess quickly spiraled into chess in the dining halls, chess on the quad, and chess in the hallway until long after midnight. In October, we went on our first real date, a starlit walk from campus to a local park where we stood on a bridge over the lake and looked up at the moon. Seven and a half years later, we still like to look at the stars, and Zoe has still never won a game of chess.
