David was working as a bicycle mechanic at Bicycle Heaven in San Antonio. The brakes on Lauren's bike broke (and according to David, her bike was not very functional to begin with) and she took it to the shop for assistance. David's customer service was impeccable and Lauren wanted to extend her thanks to him by taking him out for a beer. He refused the offer and wanted to maintain a strictly business relationship. But Lauren was persistent and eventually he caved. Their first date was at Friendly Spot, an outdoor bar in Southtown.
David planned a long weekend in one of our favorite places, West Texas. We stayed in a converted storage container home "off the grid" in Terlingua with amazing views of the desert. We planned to go on one of our favorite hikes in Big Bend National Park through the Santa Elena Canyon. At the end of the hike, David proposed and Lauren said yes! Typically, the water is cool and crisp and you can wade through and swim at the end. On this particular day, it was extremely muddy without much water due to the drought. We ended up getting stuck in the mud and Lauren broke her sandal but that didn't ruin our mood one bit! Afterwards, we went to celebrate at our favorite pizza place, Long Draw Pizza. It turned out to be an extended celebration due to some heavy rain and flash flooding. It was a day to remember!
